Goodness gracious, it’s getting late in the year. Time flies when you’re whipping up bizarre musical buckyballs and singing them to anyone who’ll listen. Time flies no matter what you’re doing, though, so we’ve been working like Santa’s political prisoners in our secret Gulag of Fun. We here at Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits know that time is short. We could all be hit by comets before you finish reading this, so there’s not a moment to waste.
If it’s been a while since you’ve checked in, boy oh boy have we had an eventful year, and it shows no sign of slowing down. We’ll give you a little roundup of our 2010 adventures, and a glimpse of things to come. New releases, tours, music videos, special shows, and—OK, let’s take a breath. One thing at a time…
This fall, of course, we released our first album in a decade, F. We’ll leave the reviews to the reviewers (and to you, O Faithful Listener), but we couldn’t be happier with the result, and with the response from old friends and new. If you haven’t bought a copy yet, you can get it at one of our shows, or you can go online RIGHT NOW and get a copy at Silver Sprocket Bicycle Club, the label who’s been showing us around since we awoke from our decade-long cryogenic nap.
While we were waiting for our album to hatch, we made our first music video ever: Yes, “Freaky Baby”, our summer booty anthem, a ridiculously fun collaboration with our friends at Bent Lens Productions, the Bay Area Derailleurs bike dance troupe, Oakland Pyrate Punx, Mystic Knights of the Cobra, and thousands of online viewers on Youtube, Funny or Die and elsewhere. It made for some slightly awkward conversation with Grandma at Thanksgiving dinner, but totally worth it. “Freaky Baby”, of course, grew up to be its own digital-only EP (available on iTunes and Amazon), featuring badass cover art by legendary local artist Janelle Hessig. Remixes and vinyl are in the works, so stay tuned for more on that.
We had so much fun making that video, we’ve decided to make more. A bunch more. Our goal is to make a video for each song on our new album. Pretty ambitious, we know. But we’ve always been too big for our britches, and since we took our britches off, we’ve been much more comfortable. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks as videos for “Poly” and “Pac Man & Pop Tarts” wrap up post-production. Stay tuned as well for updates and casting calls for other videos over the next couple of months, and you might wind up on camera with us! Yes, we’ll be wearing pants. The britches thing was just a figure of speech, OK?
We’re very pleased to announce that our old pals at Evil Twin Booking have taken us under their wing. We are honored and excited to be included in this family of shit-starters, culture jammers and – dare we say it? – revolutionaries. If you’re looking to book us for college gigs, festivals, conferences, and the like, go ahead and contact Evil Twin at: info (at) eviltwinbooking (dot) com For most other kinds of shows, you can still contact us directly. Talk to Dan at dan (at) bobbyjoeebola (dot) com!
I told you we’ve been busy. Many of you know we hit the road this October for a two-week adventure through the South, culminating in Gainesville for The Fest 9. This was our first time back to “the region” since 1999, and we were flattered and overwhelmed at the response we got. Thanks to everyone who came to see us play, and we promise we won’t wait so long next time to come back through. We had an absolute blast, and we’re excited for the next tour, which is right around the corner.
If you live in the Midwest or Northeast, look for us in December as we race to the East Coast on a three-week quest for someplace warm! Check below for dates and other information. First, we’re doing a four-date tour with our LA pals, Tartar Control. From LA, we’ll fly to Minneapolis for a week on the road with Duluth’s own Hard Feelings. After that, we’ll head due east to Minneapolis, stopping only long enough to scrape the snotsicles from our noses, culminating in Boston, MA on Dec. 20.
Trust us, after all of this we will rest… and grow beards. Keep your eyes peeled for all of the many upcoming music videos and we are sure the new year will bring some new MacNuggit albums. We have plans for about four right now. You think we’re joking. But remember, one of our oldest mantras: Just because we’re funny, doesn’t mean we’re joking. With that, we hope your holidays bring you many bags of cat vomit or whatever it is you asked Satan for… um, Santa. Yeah, tour dates below:
